I had a conversation with a friend about the obsession people have with things. You know, to the point where we no longer own our things, they own us. We buy, we use, we discard and we never stop to think what we can actually do and accomplish with the things we have.
I was first referring to how I started DJing at the age of 13, how I would beatmix between a cassette deck and a vinyl player by weighing down the needle with coins and erasers. I then mentioned music videos as an example. How huge amounts of money are being poured into something which most of the time is very random, pointless and nobody notices anyway. I said, I could make a music video with a point and shoot pocket camera and a laptop. My friend said I couldn’t… challenge accepted.
The rules were, no help from anyone and no technological gadgets were allowed to be used more than the Panasonic Lumix FX550 and my Dell XPS 1330 laptop. Other things needed would have to be made from things at home, or purchased for small amounts. I bought a piece of green fabric and two small florescent light fixtures. Total cost: 25 euro. Everything else was house hold stuff; ducked tape, curtain rods, screws and furniture.
The video material has been recorded and now I’m in post production and quite frankly I’m in over my head because the laptop is simply not fast enough to handle the spot lights, the shadows, the layers and effects. I have no idea what the final result will look like and I know I will have to compromise between my knowledge of special effects and computer power. But, this is more than anything else, a statement. A way of saying that a little bit of imagination and creativity goes a long way.
